We are pleased to announce the sale of Betty Kay Charters to Kurt & Gayleen Smith!

August 1st of 1990, Bill & Margery Whitmer bought Betty Kay Charters.

Kurt & Gayleen have officially bought Betty Kay Charters on August 9th, of 2018. We have great confidence in Kurt to run our charters boats and Gayleen to operate our charter office. Kurt and Gayleen have worked for Betty Kay Charters for the last 16 years and are very involved and aware of the day to day business functions. We are thrilled they have stepped forward to accept this exciting venture and know they will strive to offer a great fishing experience from the first phone call to getting helpful fishing tips on the boat to great catches!!

Latest Deep Sea Fishing Updates in Southern Oregon

The nearshore fishing remains strong with nice grade of rockfish being caught as well as good lingcod catches. There has been a strong impact on the sport rockfish quota, so ODF&W have reduced the sport bag limit to 4 rockfish per day and still 2 lingcod.

To offset the impact of the rockfish quota, ODF&W have established a long leader fishery where you are allowed 10 rockfish. Gear is kept 30’ off the bottom out in deeper water where other species of rockfish like; yellow tail, canary, & brown rockfish are caught. These are very good eating fish and they limit the fishers to 12 as it is more labor intensive for the crew. The cost is a little more, but you get the chance to catch more rockfish and stay out longer as they go farther offshore, 300 to 350 feet for these long leader trips.

We are still waiting to see more salmon caught before making salmon fishing trips.

As for albacore tuna fishing; this year has turned out to be hot and cold. Captain Kurt has canceled the next few trips as the warm water has withdrawn. Captain Kurt will keep a watch on the warm sea temperature where the tuna is caught, so hopefully the other trips planned will be able to go!

We will be making the long leader rockfish trips through October and the near shore rock fishing, if the quota is still not met. Hopefully there will be salmon trips and more tuna trips ahead for you our valued customers. September and October are great times of the year for relaxing ocean fishing!

Summer 2018 Update for Southern Oregon Deep Sea Fishing

Weather has been very good this summer, (for the most part).

According to Oregon Dept. of Fish & Wildlife, there has been much greater sport rockfish trip efforts than this time last year.

Due to this extra impact on rockfish ODF&W have reduced the near shore sport rock fish bag limit to four rockfish. You can still catch two lingcod. This has an impact on everyone and we don’t like this reduction in limits.

We are offering the long leader mid water rock fishing as an alternative. The cost is more, $125.00, but the sport rockfish limit is ten! Yes, you can catch 10 Rock Fish using the long leader method! We have fewer people on the boat (12 to 14) as it is more labor intensive, we travel farther out off shore, about 4 to 5 miles and fuel costs are higher…

This is how it works… We drop a 2 lb. Cannonball down to the bottom (300’) and 30’ above we start setting hooks and work 3 hooks with shrimp flies another 30’ up and hold them in position with a float. This fishery keeps the fisherman away from the fish which is protected (yellow eye rockfish). You are not allowed to keep the ling cod on these trips, but the good thing is you can catch up to 10 rockfish! Frequent caught varieties are Canary, Yellowtail, deacon, and Bocaccio Rockfish. They are all delicious eating!

Let's have the best Deep Sea Fishing Season Ever in 2018 with Betty Kay Charters!

Summer is here and looking back to the great catches of spring rock fish & halibut, I can’t help but anticipate the same for summer fishing!

We are looking forward to great offshore (20 to 50 miles) albacore tuna fishing, the nearshore rockfish & ling cod catches and where are the salmon? July, August & September are the months for prime salmon fishing. When we see salmon carried up the dock we’ll make a call out from our salmon list! Come tuna and salmon to our waters!

Something new and exciting for Bill & Margery Whitmer is coming! We are happy to share with you that long time office staff Gaylene, and longtime captain Kurt Smith have decided to buy our business! Yes, we are under shared management through the next few months until legal documents can be processed! After having our business on the market for over a year, Capt. Kurt & Gaylene have decided to make the commitment. We are confident that this new management/service will maintain the Betty Kay Charters mission of “Your Pleasure and Great Catches is our business”. Because of Captain Kurt & Gaylene’s dedication to Betty Kay Charters; giving our fishing customers the best quality fishing experience; encouragement to the sea sick, tips on fishing, sharing his lunch, making sure you are on the fish and having great catches or giving hot cocoa to a fisher kid returning cold from a fishing trip, much of Betty Kay Charters success is credited through the years by Captain Kurt & Gayleen Smith!

Look to see some creative innovations with the new owners Kurt & Gaylene! Who knows, crabbing & Clamming trips in the fall/winter? What about 18 hr tuna trips, or heading out at dusk for star gazing on a quiet stellar clear night? As for Bill & Margery, they are not retiring. Retiring is a fading word in our language. More and more people can relate to “career change” than retiring. They will stay in this area, the beautiful Southern Oregon coast. Bill will be in the maintenance mode with rentals and making 4 oz. Diamond jigs for Betty Kay Charters. Margery hopes to volunteer at the Charleston Visitor’s Center along with catch up in gardening and everything else!

THE CRAB FEED IS ON!

It’s time for the 34th Annual Charleston Crab Feed! On Saturday, February 10th, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., volunteers will be serving up whole or half fresh crab dinners with side dishes of salads, beans and bread and a beverage, and for an extra $1, your choice of a cake or pie serving. Whole crab dinners are $20, and half crab dinners are $16 but prices will be subject to the markets.

There will also be local wine, craft beer, crab bibs, entertainment and lots of fun. And vendor coupons and prize drawings during the festival! Bring your family and your friends, or come by yourself and make new friends or see old ones! This party is the main fundraising event for the Charleston Visitor Center but also provides funding to other needs in the Charleston community. How nice to give back while you’re having a great meal.

Another year is underway and we at Betty Kay Charters are looking forward to a great season right around the corner. We will start our near shore ocean rock fishing March 1st. Each winter our inspected charter vessels Shamrock & Betty Kay go to the Charleston shipyard to get hauled out for maintenance and prepare for United States Coast Guard inspection and re-certification.

We are excited to begin this season with beautiful new upholstery on the seats in the Betty Kay. Also, a new work station for the Betty Kay will be ready for our crew and fishing customers! Yes!
